The powder coating process, developed in the late 1940s, involves spraying powder onto an item using an electrostatic spray gun. The charged powder is attracted to the item's surface, forming a thin, paint-like layer that adheres when heated beyond the powder's melting point prior to application.

Thermoset powders come in various types derived from epoxy, acrylics, hydroxyls (polyester), and carboxyl (polyurethane) groups. Among these, epoxy and polyester-based powders are the most common. Epoxy resin-based powders create tough, impact-resistant coatings with excellent corrosion resistance. However, they may exhibit poor UV resistance, making them more suitable for internal applications where exposure to direct sunlight is minimal, as color and gloss can degrade over time.
