THE POWDER COATING PROCESS

Powder coating is a type of coating that is dry, Unlike conventional liquid paint, which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light.

The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a thick, tough finish that is more durable than conventional paint.

Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metal objects, particularly those subject to rough use. Advancements in powder coating technology like UV-curable powder coatings allow for other materials such as plastics, composites, carbon fiber, and MDF (medium-density fibreboard) to be powder coated, as little heat or oven dwell time is required to process them.

Powder coatings contain no solvents and release little or no amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the atmosphere. Thus, there is no need for finishers to buy costly pollution control equipment. Companies can comply more easily and economically with environmental regulations, such as those issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Covalent bonded materials like epoxy have a lower melting point and conductivity, making this thermoset polymer coating hard, flexible, highly adhesive and resistant to many environmental challenges and chemicals

THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF POWDER COATINGS, DEPENDING ON USE

Depending on the type of application we recommend to use epoxy or polyester based resin powder coatings. If your main usage of the product in which you will apply the powder is for indoors, epoxy is more suitable for this type of usage. However, if the product it's going to be exposed to difficult climate conditions, high heating or exterior use in general, polyester powder coatings would be recommended.

There's also a possibility to use hybrid powder coatings instead of polyester or epoxy. Hybrid powder coating offer a mix in bettwen epoxy and polyester capabilities, which does not necessarily means it is the best mix of both worlds. UV Damage can still be high on hybrid coatings, however corrosion can be boosted with hybrid coatings.
